Marital bliss and happy Valentine’s turned into gunfire for a newlywed Lowndes County couple.
Parish Devaughn Brewer, 24, of 172 Swedenburg Circle in Columbus, was charged with aggravated domestic violence and possession of a weapon by a felon after police say he shot his 24-year-old wife in the leg during a dispute Monday evening at a Columbus motel.
Brewer remains in the Lowndes County Jail under a hold by the Mississippi Department of Correction because he already was on probation in this state. He also has an armed robbery charge from October 2011 from Dekalb County, Ga., court records show.
Brewer and the victim were married last weekend, just three days before the shooting.
Police went to the Columbus Inn and Suites on Highway 45 on the northern edge of historic downtown just before 7 p.m. Monday after the woman reported being shot. Officers found her and Brewer.
She was treated at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle and released Monday night. Brewer was taken into custody.
A gunshot also apparently broke the window of the couple’s hotel room, police said.
A gun was recovered, but police would not disclose the make or caliber.
