Investigators in Lowndes County in Mississippi and Pickens and surrounding counties in Alabama still are trying to identify a man found just after 8 a.m. Sunday in the front yard of a home just across the state line in Pickens County.

The man had been shot multiple times and was found less than a quarter mile off Highway 82 along County Road 53.

Investigators don’t think he was shot at the scene but rather suspect he was dumped there. Witnesses who live in the area say investigators told them there wasn’t a large amount of blood or other evidence that would suggest the man was shot there.

Dove hunters spotted the body and reported it to the Sheriff’s Department.

The man is described as being a black male in his 40s or 50s, with a gray goatee and bald head, about six feet tall, weighing about 220 pounds. No one matching the description has been reported missing in Pickens or Lowndes counties, but investigators are working closely with Columbus Police on the belief the man has ties to the area.

Pickens investigators also have sent photos and descriptions to other area counties.

As of Wednesday afternoon, they still were awaiting results of fingerprint tests for a possible identification.
