BREAKING NEWS: The Packet has learned that the manslaughter trial of former Columbus Police Department officer Canyon Boykin has been continued. The delay is because of a serious illness on the prosecution staff.
Boykin was indicted last September in the shooting death of Ricky Ball, who was shot after a struggle when he tried to run from a traffic stop. Trial was set for Oct. 16 in Walthall County in southwest Mississippi. Circuit Court Judge Lee Coleman moved the trial because of extensive publicity, protests and community interest. Walthall County has similar demographics to Lowndes County.
