A 21-year-old Columbus man identified as Adarious O’Neal of Jess Lyons Rd. has died after being shot during an altercation in an apartment complex parking lot early Sunday morning, according to Columbus Police Chief Fred Shelton. O’Neal was brought to Baptist memorial hospital by a private vehicle where he was pronounced dead a short time later. An autopsy has been ordered and will be done early this week.
The victim and the shooter knew each other, according to Chief Shelton.
The incident occurred in the parking lot of The Reserve Apartments on 31st Avenue in Columbus. The initial call came in near 2 a.m. Sunday morning July 1, 2018. A second person was injured during the incident and has been taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital Golden Triangle with non-life-threatening injuries.
“This is still early in our investigation, but as of now we know there was some type of argument or altercation in the parking lot,” Chief Shelton said. “The victim did not live here, but the incident occurred in the parking lot of the apartments known as The Reserve. A second person was injured during the incident and that person is being treated at Baptist Hospital. We are working to determine exactly how that second person was injured.”
Chief Shelton said information on a suspect is being developed at this time and the case is under active investigation by Columbus Police.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call Crimestoppers at 800-530-7151.
