A New Hope High School student was arrested Monday for bringing a BB gun to campus.
According to the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office, a 17-year-old student posted a video on social media with a handgun.
Lowndes County Sheriff Eddie Hawkins said his office and the Lowndes County School District received multiple calls about the social media post and began investigating.
The handgun was ultimately found and was revealed to be a BB gun, which is still illegal to have on a school campus.
Hawkins said the following in a Facebook post:
“Today, a disturbing video posted on social media of a student in possession of a handgun was brought to our attention. The Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office working in Conjunction with the Lowndes County School District identified the 17-year-old suspect in this case and have now resolved the situation. We are still receiving calls about this video. However, we want to reassure the parents of New Hope High School that there is no danger to the students or the school. The suspect in this case has been arrested and charges are being filed. The handgun was recovered and was found to be a BB gun which is still against the law to have on school campus.
“We want to thank everyone for sharing this disturbing video with us today. This is a perfect example of someone seeing something, and saying something. The safety of our children is the most important thing in the world, but we can’t keep people safe without you being our eyes and ears. Thanks to everyone.”
