Columbus police are currently investigating two incidents that occurred on Tuesday afternoon, June 13,
2023. One of the incidents involved shots being fired on the South Side, while the other incident
involved the discovery of shell casings near a car that had veered off the road on Moss Street near
Seventh Avenue North. The two shootings are said to be possibly related but are still under investigation.
North Side:
Sources close to The Packet stated that a car turned onto Moss Street when another vehicle encountered
it at a curve and opened fire, causing the car to go into a ditch. Coincidentally, a passing deputy noticed
the car had run off the road. Upon approaching the vehicle, two of the three occupants exited with guns
in their possession. In response to the perceived threat, the deputy drew his service weapon, and one of
the men fled the scene. The deputy detained the remaining two individuals. CPD arrived at the scene
after a 911 call and assumed control of the situation. They took the man and a woman into custody for
questioning, while the other man who fled was not apprehended according to the source. Sources
informed The Packet that the man who was taken in for questioning is currently under indictment but
was released from custody on Tuesday evening along with the female. According to a press release
issued by the CPD one of the vehicle occupants did sustain minor injuries and was given medical
attention without having to be transported to the hospital.

South Side:
On June 13, 2023, at 1226 hours, the Columbus Police Department (CPD) responded to a report of shots
fired on 11th Avenue South, located between 8th and 9th Street South.
The incident was reported by a citizen who provided descriptions of the shooters and the vehicle
associated with one of them. Upon arrival at the scene, an officer apprehended a subject matching the
description. Meanwhile, investigators began gathering statements from residents in the area and made
contact with several other individuals involved in the shooting.
Assisting the CPD, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics was present at the scene and detected a strong
odor of marijuana emanating from a nearby residence where the questioning of the involved subjects was
taking place.
Subsequently, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics obtained a search warrant for the residence based on
the compelling odor of marijuana. Executing the warrant, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics, in
collaboration with the CPD, recovered two AR pistols, one AR magazine, one 9mm handgun, one 9mm
handgun magazine, and a significant quantity of marijuana, constituting a felony amount.
As a result of the investigation, a juvenile was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana.
Additionally, M. Gardner (18) and Isaac Hayes (18) were both arrested and charged with discharging a
firearm within city limits.
